FOUNDATION HISTORY

The History of the Foundation

In February 2001, several of Scott’s family members including Sandy Mishkin (Scott’s father), Rona Mishkin (Scott’s mother), Heather Mishkin (Scott’s wife) and David Richey (Heather’s father) and a few friends in Dave Gheesling, Andy Hogan and Jay Kopelson established The Scott G. Mishkin Foundation as a celebration of Scott’s life.

By way of a specific request from Scott, the foundation supports Camp Sunshine and the Atlanta Ronald McDonald House by way of an annual golf event.  From 2001 to 2006, this organization made significant annual contributions (from approximately $25,000 to 65,000 each year) to both organizations as a direct result of the newly named Scotty Golf Classic.  The foundation remains in place today in the name and honor of Scott G. Mishkin, and in some ways The Scotty Foundation will continue doing much of the good work started by TSGMF, while focused on taking the impact delivered to the cause to significantly higher planes.

The History of Our Golf Event

Foundation History

The Scotty Golf Classic has always been much more than just another golf outing; significant time has been spent by the organization and the event’s participants to both better understand the cause and recognize the many generous sponsors who have made the event possible and such a big success.

In October of 1995, several Atlanta-based friends put together a small golf outing – the All Hallows Eve Cabernet Golf Classic. Over the course of the next five years, the tradition of the All Hallows Eve Cabernet Golf Classic continued. Each year, a celebratory toast of red wine was part of the proceedings, thus the original tournament name. The spirit of the event was camaraderie, the celebration of the good things in life, and the like.

In October of 1998, Scott Mishkin was diagnosed with Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor. By October of 2000, Scott was unable to work any longer. However, Scott put his effort into helping coordinate the October 28, 2000 All Hallows Eve Cabernet Golf Classic and was named Honorary Chairman at the Awards Banquet following the event.

Golf had become Scott’s passion. As a great athlete, Scott had enjoyed and excelled at such sports as basketball and tennis, but in his weakened state he could only muster up the strength to play golf.  On October 27th that year, he played 9 stroke-play holes with friends Jay Kopelson, Sam O’Krent and Dave Gheesling, and he managed to get in all 18 holes of scramble play on tournament day.

Only 81 days after the great October 28, 2000, tournament at Chestatee Golf Club, Scott lost his battle with cancer after an inspirational 27-month battle on January 17, 2001.
